Art Hack Day: DETHRONE
A 48-hour hackathon for artists whose medium is technology and technologists whose medium is art.
Goal & Strategy
Forty-eight hours to confront modern digital monarchs.
Goal
Create space for unlikely collaborators to question contemporary mechanisms of power.
Strategy
A 2-day hackathon to produce a gallery exhibition.
The Project
Art Hack Day is a global movement that brings together hackers and artists to create works that transcend both disciplines. DETHRONE, held at Gray Area in San Francisco in February 2024, asked participants to confront the question: who are the modern digital monarchs, and how can we challenge them?
Over the course of 48 hours, participants formed teams, developed concepts, and built 15 new artworks that were exhibited to the public at a closing party. The works ranged from interactive installations questioning algorithmic authority to performances confronting the commodification of identity in digital spaces. Among them: a printer suspended from a high-mounted dolly, continuously outputting receipts from the White House for the length of the exhibition, and a candlelit shrine to Elizabeth Holmes.
As Lead Producer I ran every aspect of the production: liaising with Gray Area, promotion, drafting the artist call and selecting the artists, staffing the volunteers, and communication with participants before and during the 48 hours. I also resurrected Art Hack Day's defunct website and built out the DETHRONE edition on it.
